Cool Stuff from the Past: Fish Trap
Google Earth is good for something. Recently, an amateur archaeologist found this 1,000 year old fish trap in Britain.
It was designed to act like a rock pool, trapping fish behind its stone walls as the tide flowed out. At its point is a gap where fisherman would have placed nets to catch fish. They could also have blocked up the gap, and then scooped up fish trapped in the shallows.
Today, the tide is too low and fish can no longer be trapped as the water recedes. Researchers believe it has sunk into the sand over the centuries.
