German U-Boat in Toronto
I found this old picture of a World War 1 U-Boat parking in front of Toronto's Harbour Commission building and I thought it was interesting for a couple of reasons.
First of all, who ever knew that a U-Boat visited Toronto. I know there was quite a battle further east in the St. Lawrence to keep U-Boats from disrupting shipping during World War II. This boat, captured by the Americans, toured the Great Lakes in 1919-1920 after the end of the war and was ultimately used as target practice and was scuttled in Lake Huron around 1921.
I also find it interesting to see this building right on the shore of Lake Ontario, given that it now rests off the Gardner Expressway and is several hundred yards from the new shoreline.
