On this day in history: 1945
It was foggy in New York on July 28th, 1945.
It was so foggy that a B-25 Mitchell bomber flew out of the fog and slammed into the side of the Empire State Building killing all 5 of the crew.
Eight people in the building were killed.
A huge hole was left in the side of the building and the wreckage hung out over Fifth Avenue for over a week.
I was looking at some old Toronto Star editions from the "Pages from the Past" link on their website. I love going through the old papers and seeing what was newsworthy. Its worth a visit if you have time at thestar.com.
There is also an article about a judge who let a drunk driver off the charges against him. The article indicates that the judge so ruled because the evidence showed the man was so polluted that there was no chance that he could have operated any vehicle. If he couldn't drive, how could he be convicted of drunk driving.
I think they've plugged that little loophole in the criminal code now.
Also in the news that day, the Warden and two senior staff were fired from a Toronto area jail for incompetence. It seems that two inmates filed through the bars of the cells unnoticed and made their escape while under their watch. It is believed that the files were snuck into the jail in the shoes of a visitor the day before. Must have been some really good files.
Anyway..........
