Searching for the Franklin Expedition

The Canadian Government is about to announce a renewed search to find the lost ships of the doomed Franklin expedition, the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, the Toronto Star Reported today.

These ships sailed from England in 1845 to explore and and find a way to sail through the Northwest Passage. Neither the ships nor any of the 100 or so crew were ever seen again. A search part sent out in 1848 came up empty.

Eight further searches were conducted in the 12 years following the expedition's disappearance, financed by everyone from the British navy to the Hudson's Bay Company to Franklin's wife.

In the mid-1980s, University of Alberta researchers discovered the graves of three of Franklin's men in the far north.

The bodies showed signs of severe malnutrition and possible lead poisoning from the lead solder used on the cans containing the expedition's provisions.

This should be an interesting story to follow.
