Here fishy, fishy, fishy!
The Toronto Star ran a neat article today about the Ringwood Fish Culture Station, a place where more than a million salmon and trout get their start each year.
The Ministry of Natural Resources opened the hatchery in 1982, but as so often happens in environmental programs, cost cutting by the Ontario government forced the station closed in 2006.
According to the Toronto Star, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters joined forces with the Toronto Sportsmen's Show to rescue the hatchery; each contributes $50,000 each year to keep it running.
Largely it is thanks to the work of the club and the huge number of volunteer hours they put in that keeps it running. Every year, they strip hundreds of thousands of eggs from spawning salmon each October along the Credit River in Mississauga. My son and I fish there every year. It is really something to see these huge fish jump out of the water on their way up the river.
In mid-November, the fry are released in three streams leading to Lake Ontario. In the end, it is not just about caring for the environment but also about keeping Ontario’s sport fishing industry healthy.
Apparently the volunteers have discovered the little fishies like their music, too. According to the Star article, the Coho like to rock, but they're particular.
Rush makes them scatter. AC/DC makes them go faster and move in a pattern.
Now I know where all the tickets to the Toronto show went.
