The Hindenburg Disaster: May 6, 1937
Can you say "dirigible"? Sure, I knew you could. I prefer "Zeppelin" myself.
The Hindenburg, the pride of Nazi Germany, blew up in a big way when it touched down in New Jersey after a cross-Atlantic flight, killing 36 passengers and crewmembers.
While attempting to land at its moor, the airship suddenly burst into flames (the hydrogen that filled these vessels was incredibly flamable). Falling 200 feet to the ground, the hull of the airship incinerated within seconds. Thirteen passengers, 21 crewmen, and 1 civilian member of the ground crew lost their lives, and most of the survivors suffered substantial injuries.
The voice of the radio announcer,Herb Morrison, can be heard in the famous sound bite probably heard at least once by everyone, immortalized the Hindenberg disaster as he horror-filled commentary includes that famous cry "Oh, the humanity!"
