Christopher Columbus first lays eyes on Jamaica during his second voyage to the New World (1494. I guess he missed it the first time around.)
The U.S. invades the Dominican Republic (1916, but they stayed on and drank Red Stripe on the beaches until 1924. That must have been hard for those Marines had to suffer through the enitre first World War in the balmy Dominican Republic, eh? I'll bet they were disappointed about missing all that trench warfare)
