Air France Sues the GTAA

Uh-oh. Air France is suing the Greater Toronto Airport Authority (and others) for $180 million saying the GTAA is negligent in not have any emergency room required by international airport standards for aircraft who overshoot the runway.

Oh yeah. Well after they parked their Air France jet in the ravine in 2005, subsequent fire supression efforts caused serious pollution problems for the creek that runs through that ravine. No one was killed, but who is going to pay for that?

Can you say "counter-sue"? Sure, I knew you could.

Unfortunately and in Characteristic Canadian way of doing business we have in Toronto the second most expensive airport in the world and the most expensive airport in North America…
And beside that doesn’t have the minimum safety devices and installations required that other airports have implemented…

It’s a perfect example of Canadian Business…

And if you want to argue with me about this…please take a look at the final accident report and you will see how many safety devices and procedures are missing at the GTAA facilities.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runway_safety_area

“From the aftermath of the Air France Flight 358 in Toronto, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada recommended changes to the runway safety areas on runways at Canadian airports. “

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engineered_materials_arrestor_system

“Engineered materials arrestor system or Engineered materials arresting system (EMAS) is a bed of lightweight, crushable concrete built at the end of a runway. The purpose of an EMAS is to stop an overrun aircraft with no human injury and minimal aircraft damage (usually none). The aircraft is slowed by the loss of energy required to crush the concrete blocks. An EMAS is similar in concept to the runaway truck ramp made of gravel. An EMAS is intended to stop aircraft that have overshot a runway when there is an insufficient free space for a standard runway safety area (RSA). The EMAS installed at JFK in 1999 has successfully stopped three aircraft, including one Boeing 747.”

Many airport in the world have implemented this system but not GTAA,

Enjoy the ride my friend…nobody cares…

And if you wonder how everybody escape with minimal injuries…? That’s because the Air France crew has an exemplar reaction and action plan.
Everybody escape because of the crew and not because of anybody from Airport…

cheers

Yeah, well the fact that Air France crew did a good job in making sure that all passengers escape serious injury is no quesion here. Fact is that Air France knew that runway runoff areas "are not standard in Canada" and what is even more intersting is that Air France has continued to operate flights including those by A340 aircraft on Runway 24L since the said incident. If Air France felt the runway is that unsafe, why did they continue to land on that runway??? Doesn't that seem stupid??? The NTSB report clearly says that the aircraft touched down halfay down the runway and they knew of the bad thunderstorm acticity. If an aircraft touches down that far down the runway the risks of not having enough room are known. It's clear they should have aborted the landing and they didn't, so it's Air France's total fault of risking the lives of 300 people. I believe the GTAA should ban Air France from Pearson unless they drop the lawsuit, which Air France is bound to loose anyways. Damn those french frog eaters.

Typical Canadian Mind….

Why did Air France continue to come at Pearson on the same runway…
On that day I don’t think that the crew had the option to decide what Runway to use…
YOU retarded…

And now start complaining why the tourism is in free fall in Canada…
Air Singapore was banned from Pearson because Air Canada was loosing his Share of customers…
Are you idiots or something…

GTAA is MANAGING and EXPENSIVE UNSAFE AIRPORT….
And you are complaining about French Mind….

Have you ever heard about Renault Peugeot Citroen, Airbus,….did You Canadians have something like that…or you driving Corolla….

Enjoy you stupidity….Americans’ wannabe….

Already many Torontonians are going in Buffalo Airport because is much cheaper ad much reliable…
Let’s ban Air France…and we will have only Air Canada…

All of us we should sue GTAA for making us using an dangerous AIRPORT….

First at all I am not Canadian, second of all, before you say something think it through. I was saying why did Air France continiue to use that runway after the accident, I didn't say they had a choice on the day of the accident, and who is the Retarded One Now. Why are you mentioning French automakers "what kind of statement are you making???", of course I have heard of them and drove them, I am from Europe. If you want to talk and compare Toyota to Renault or Peugot you are definatelly in the wrong place. The fact that it is the most expensive airport in North America, is because of the 11 billion dollar renovations that are still underway right now. Pearson is up to Canadian Standards and it is not required to abide by different standards such as from Europe, of course it would be better if all standards where the same, it would make sense, but since it is not so, then Pearson should not be blamed for abiding to the standards that are required.

Now to the second moron who posted after me. The fact that people go to Buffalo is nothing new, it's their choice, and Air France is not one of two airlines operating at Pearson. Unless you fly to France then to you Air France is the most important airline operating at Pearson.

who knew that such a topic could spark such heated discussion? I didn't. Well apart from occasional bad spelling and grammar, everyone really makes a great argument. But do we need to take it so far as insulting each other? "Typical Canadian Mind" "American Idiocy" "French Frog Eaters"? Glad you guys are so passionate about the topic, but no need to make fun of each other. Keep the peace.
